- You are the driver, and the person responsible for the vehicle, your safety and that of your passengers. Drive to survive!
- Have your car checked or serviced before starting on your holiday. Check tyre pressures, tyre tread is adequate, brakes and all lights are working properly. Check WoF and Registration are current.
- Plan your travel to avoid traffic jams and keep calm when in congested traffic, be courteous, remember all drivers make mistakes.
- Obey the road rules. Keep eye contact with other drivers and avoid problem drivers.
- Drive within the speed limit at all times and to the conditions.
- Distractions – don’t text and drive, avoid talking on a mobile phone while driving unless necessary, pull over if possible.
- Drink driving – driving and alcohol don’t mix. Plan how you will get home before you depart, use taxis, be a sober driver or take public transport.
- Maintain the gap – Remember your 2 and 4 second rules, increase these gaps where possible when travelling longer distances. Look ahead, always scan up to 12 seconds up the road.
- Always wear your seatbelt , and ensure every passenger is securely restrained. Make sure loose articles and pets are secured within your vehicle.
- Avoid Fatigue -get adequate rest and a good night’s sleep before setting off on a long road trip.
